Description:

Montana State University (MSU) seeks a partner to license and commercialize a new spring durum wheat (experimental line name: MTD18148), developed as an offspring of a cross between the cultivars Joppa and Alzada. MTD18148 exhibits good yield potential, good test weight and protein, semi-dwarf plant height and early heading, as well as excellent end-use qualities including high yellow semolina, high semolina protein and strong gluten. MTD18148 possesses grain protein content significantly higher than Alzada, Divide, Joppa, and equal to ND Riveland and Carpio.

MTD18148 vs other durum wheats

In May 2023, North Dakota State University measured pasta quality characteristics of MTD18148, Alzada, and several other varieties.  Detailed results are available for review.  MTD18148 was very good, and similar to MT Blackbeard.

Benefits:

  • Good yield potential, test weight, protein, and gluten
  • Semi-dwarf plant height, early heading, with low sawfly cutting
  • High yellowness, high semolina protein, and high gluten index, MTD18148 is an excellent replacement for Alzada in terms of quality
  • Cold Hardy: bred to perform in the harsh northern climate of Montana
  • Cost-Effective Seed Production: higher seed yield than Alzada and Joppa

Opportunity:

  • US plant variety protection (PVP) rights available for license and commercialization in the US, and international plant breeder’s rights available for license and commercialization outside the US.

  • Additional agronomic information available in the MTD18148 Variety Release Package.

  • MSU expects to have additional pasta quality data avaiable in March.  This will be posted for public review.  If you are interested in seeing it as soon as it is available, contact us.

  • MSU will plant Breeder Seed in spring 2023, to harvest Foundation Seed in fall 2023.  The licensee(s) will be expected to purchase this Foundation Seed, "in dirt", at a rate of $40/bu.

  • To submit a licensing proposal, respond by 11:59pm Friday, June 30, 2023, to the licensing opportunity announcement at: MTD18148_Licensing_Opportunity
